This article is intended to shed some light on how to add files to Google Drive shared folders and how to upload files to shared Google Drive.

How to access a shared folder on Google Drive?

Google Drive is a service that allows users to store their files on the cloud and synchronize across multiple devices.  Once uploaded, the files can be accessed anywhere with a proper device and internet connection.

Anything that we create or upload on Google Drive is private to the user, until and unless otherwise specified. After creating a folder on Google Drive, the user can add the Gmail ids’ with whom he wants to share the folder. By doing this, the folder and all its contents and files are accessible to the shared users.

How to create and add files to a shared folder on the Google Drive app on an android mobile phone?

At first, we will see how to create and add files to a shared folder on Google Drive using android mobile.

Step 1: Tap the Google Drive application on your android mobile phone.

Step 2: It takes us to our Google Drive home page. On the bottom right, you can see the “+” icon. Tapping the icon opens a popover with various options. If you want to create a folder within some other folder, navigate to the specified folder. On the bottom right, you can see the “+” icon. Tapping the icon opens a popover with various options.

Step 3: Tap the “🗀 Folder” option.  It opens a popover titled “New folder”.  Enter the name of and folder and press the “Create” button.

Step 4: As seen already, the folder created is private to you, the user.  To make this folder “Shared”, tap “ present at the bottom right of the folder you want to share and you can see “👤+ Share”. After creating a folder on Google Drive, right-click on the folder, it will display various options and you can see “👤+ Share”. 

Tap this option and it opens a new window.  Add the Gmail ids’ of the ones with whom you want to share one after the another by tapping  the icon after entering every mail id in the field beside the icon “👤+”.  Give them “Editor” privilege access so that any shared user can create, edit, add and delete the files inside the folder and make teamwork possible.

The folder now has 👤 icon on its bottom right, indicating that it is a shared one. 

How to create and add files to a shared folder on Google Drive on a personal computer?

To create and add files to a shared folder on Google Drive using a personal computer, follow the below steps.

Step 1: Go to the website https://Drive.Google.com/ in your web browser.  It opens the main page of your Google Drive if you are already logged in with your Google account. 

Note: If you haven’t logged in already, it will display the page, and on the top right, you can see the “Go to Drive” button. On clicking this button it will open a new window in your browser to sign in.  You can log into your account here and on successful logging, it takes to the home page of your Google Drive.

Step 2: On your home page, you can see the “+New” icon on the top left. Press that and it opens a popover showing us multiple options. If you want to create the shared folder inside an existing folder, you can navigate to the specified folder and create from there as you can see the “+New” icon on the top left.

Step 3: Choose the “🗀 Folder” option by pressing on it.  It opens a small popover window titled “New folder”.  You name the folder and proceed to create the folder by pressing the “CREATE” button. 

Step 4: After the creation, the folder is explicitly shown in blue in color for our identification.  To make it a shared folder, right-click on the folder will show many options in the popover. Press the “👤+ Share” button and it opens a popover.

Step 5: You can the Gmail ids’ of all the people you want one by one by pressing enter button after writing one’s id.  You can also send messages while sharing.  

Above the “Done” button, you can set the privileged access to the shared users for your shared folder.  Choose ‘Editor’ privilege so that any of the shared users can use the folder like you.

Step 6: After entering ids, press the “Share” button.  It proceeds to create a shared folder.  You can see the “👤” icon on the bottom right of the folder, indicating that it is a shared one.

How to upload files to the shared folder on the Google Drive application on the android mobile phone?

To upload files to the shared Google Drive from an android mobile phone, follow the below steps.

Step 1: Tap the Google Drive application on your mobile.

Step 2: It opens the main page of the Drive on the application.  On the bottom you can see 4 buttons, the third one is “Shared”, where you can see all the files and folders shared with you by others sorted by shared time in descending order, with the latest one on top of the list. You can identify the shared folders with folder icons with a person emoji icon in its bottom right.

Note: In case you are the one who created and shared the folder, please navigate to the folder by tapping  “Files” found at the bottom right corner.

Step 3: Tap the specific shared folder to which you want to upload.  You can see the “+ New” icon at your bottom right corner. Tapping this opens a popover titled “Create New”

Step 4: You can see the Upload “↑“ icon. Tap this and it opens a new window to select files to upload. To browse files across multiple categories, you can see  the icon at the top left, tap it and you can see a list of categories as Images, Videos, Audio, different folders, Phone, and SD card.

Step 5: If you want to select only one file, a gentle tap starts uploading to the shared folder. If you want to select multiple files long press on a file, and then a gentle tap on other files selects them.  

Step 6: After selecting, Tap the “Open” button at the top right corner. It will start uploading to the shared folder.

How to upload files to a shared Google Drive from a personal computer?

To upload files to a shared Google Drive from a personal computer, follow the below steps.

Step 1: Go to the site https://Drive.Google.com/ in your web browser. It opens the main page of your Google Drive if you are already logged in with your Google account. 

Note: If you haven’t logged in already, it will display the page, and on the top right, you can see the “Go to Drive” button. On clicking this button it will open a new window in your browser to sign in.  You can log into your account here and on successful logging, it takes to the home page of your Google Drive.

Step 2: Now you can see the “Shared with me” option on the left side. Tap this and you can see the list of folders and files that are shared with you by others. Double click on the shared folder that you want to upload. 

In case you want to upload a file to a folder that is created by you and shared with others, please find it by tapping on “My Drive” in Folders Section. You can identify them with  person emoji on the folder

Step 3: After navigating to the shared folder, at the top left corner, you can find the “+ New” option. Tap this and you can see “File upload”. Press the option and it opens a new window to select files.

Step 4: Browse and select files that you want to upload. After selection, click the “Open” button. It will upload all the selected files to the shared folder.

Note: You can also upload the entire folder to the shared folder on a computer, by selecting the “Folder upload” option in step 3.
