  • Visit Sign-in & security and start a Security Checkup. It is strongly recommended for you have to 2-Step Verification enabled.

Step 1: Open the document of your choice and head to File > Protect Document > Encrypt with Password. 

Step 2: Pick a password for the file and make sure you remember it—if you forget, that file will be lost forever. Then upload that file to Google Drive.

Step 3: Google won’t be able to read the file, but you’ll be able to download it and open it on any PC with Microsoft Office installed.

What if you need to encrypt non-Office documents, or you don’t own a copy of Microsoft Office?

Boxcryptor is a more versatile choice. It’s very similar to Dropbox, Google Drive, and other cloud storage services.

To encrypt your document with Boxcrypt, 

Step 1: Install Boxcryptor, enable Google Drive in Boxcryptor’s settings, and then access Boxcryptor from Windows Explorer’s sidebar.

Step 2: Right-click on any files you want to secure, choose the Boxcryptor > Encrypt option, and watch the checkbox turn green. 

Hurray, your file is now encrypted.

Password protect google spreadsheet

Just like any other document google drive does not natively provide support to password protect spreadsheets as well. But luckily provides us with an efficient template solution to achieve this.

How to Password protect google spreadsheet?

To password protect google spreadsheet, simply follow the below steps:

Step 1: Open and make a copy of the ProtectedSheet Google spreadsheet. You can rename it to any name of your choice.

Step 2: Then select “Tools->Script Editor”. This will bring up a script in a new window or tab.

Step 3: In the new window, select “File->Manage Versions” and click on “Save a new version”

You can leave all fields blank. A new row for version 1 will appear. Just click the “OK” button.

Step 4: Now select “Publish->Deploy as web app” and click on the “Deploy” button.

Step 5: Make sure a confirmation that your app has been deployed as a web app displayed.

Then close this window and come back to the spreadsheet tab or window. You will find a new menu item “Protect File” in the spreadsheet. Select “Protect File->Initialize” and provide required permissions.

Now you can add whatever you want to store securely into the document. Just make sure you leave the first two colored rows intact.

Step 6: To secure the document, select “Protect File -> Encrypt File”. You will be asked to enter a password. Once done, this will scramble the content of each cell in the document. 

That’s it! Now your data is fully password protected and nobody can read it without having the password you have set.

Decrypting the password protecting spreadsheet

Whenever you want to decrypt your document, 

Step 1: Open it and select “Protect File -> Decrypt File”

You will be again asked for the password giving which will decrypt and bring back the cell contents which you can read or edit.

Note: This works well if you are opening the spreadsheet on a PC. But if you are opening it from a phone, Google always loads the phone version and you won’t get the 

“Protect File” menu. 

Encoding/decoding spreadsheet from mobile devices

To encode/decode your spreadsheet from a phone, click on the encrypt/decrypt URL which will be present in the first row. This URL gets created and added once you deploy the web app.

On loading, the URL will show a web page where you can enter your password to encrypt or decrypt the document. Once done, a “Go back” link will appear which you can click to load the encrypted/decrypted spreadsheet.

Changing the password of the protected spreadsheet

You can also change the password anytime using the “Protect File -> Change Password” menu option.
