Approach – 1: You can use the Shapes Option
The most common and efficient way is to use the Shapes option. By using this option, not only do you can just able to insert a vertical line but also you can able to customize the vertical line by changing the weight, style, color, etc.
Now, follow the below steps to use the Shapes option.
Step-1: Open your Google Docs, for the one you want to add the vertical line, and then click on the insert tab from the top which is present in between the View and Format tab.
Step-2: Click on the Drawing option, which is present next to the Table option. Now you can able to see two options, click on the + New button. You can also choose the From Drive option, in case you have any existing template for the vertical line.
Step-3: As the next step, click on the dropdown next to the line and then select a line or Arrow based on your need, and then you can drag it vertically to draw the line.
Step-4: Now you can able to see the vertical lines as below. You can click on the Save and Close button if you don’t want any customization. If you want to customize the lines with color or weight, etc, you can move to Step-5.
Step-5:You can select the line and click on the weight button and choose the pixel you want to change the weight of the line as highlighted below.
Step-6: If you want to change the color of the vertical lines, you can click on the color button and choose the appropriate color based on need and then click on the save and close button to save the changes.
Step-7: You can also make the line a dashed line by clicking on the Line Dash button and choosing the appropriate format as highlighted below.
Approach- 2: You can add lines between text
If you have any requirements, you can also insert a vertical line between the text. One more thing you can divide your text into different columns and add the lines between them. Let’s discuss here how you can add vertical lines between text using the below steps.
Step-1: The first step is to click on the Format tab and then click on the Columns option.
Step-2: The next step is to click on the more options.
Step-3: On the Column options window, select the number of columns, Spacing based on your need, and Finally, make sure to select the Line between columns option. Click on the apply button to add the changes.
If you will choose the number of columns options as two columns and then select the Line between columns, then it will look like below.
Approach-3: Using the Keyboard shortcut
One more simple approach is to use the vertical line symbol ( | ) from the keyboard and that key is present just down to the Backspace key in the keyboard.
Approach-4: Using the Borders and shading option
Another way to create a vertical line is to use the Borders and shading option. Follow the below steps to use the Borders and Shading option.
Step-1: Click on the Format option and then click on the Borders and Shading option.
Step-2: On the Borders and Shading window, You can select the below-needed options based on your requirement and then click on the Apply button.
