
It’s very easy to overlap images in Google Docs. You can easily put an image behind another image in Google Docs. Overlapping images in Google Docs allows you to design attractive and more engaging visuals.
- To Overlap images in Google Docs, Click insert menu –> Drawing –> + New. On the Drawing window, click the image icon to upload the first image –> same way upload another image–> drag the second image to a proper location over the first image.
- You can use the “Drawing” option and “Wrap text” option to layer images in Google Docs.

Like putting text over an image, you can also put an image over another image in Google Docs. You can either make the image overlap or just place any image over another existing image in Google Docs. Overlapping images in Google Docs is also called layer images in Google Docs.

How to overlap images in Google Docs?
With the layering option in Google Docs, you can add watermarks, and words to a picture, or even merge more than one image. Basically, you can find the best two ways to layer images in Google Docs:
- Approach-1: Using the “Wrap text” option
- Approach-2: Using the “Google Drawings” tool
Unlike Microsoft Word, Google Slides, etc., overlapping images in Google Docs or text over another image without any fuss is not possible. To put an image over another image requires some effort to be done. Let’s see some of the workarounds to achieve this. Before doing so, make sure that the image is always set to wrap text and the margin is 0″. Use scroll arrows & shift keys to move the image in small increments to avoid misplacements.
Approach-1: Using the “Wrap text” option
Follow the below steps.
Step 1: Open Google Docs, sign in to your account, and open the document in which you want to do overlap images.
Step 2: Navigate to the menu bar, click ‘Insert’ > ‘Image’, and choose any of the options to insert the image.

Step 3: Click on the images uploaded and from the menu below each of them, select “Wrap text”. Position the images where you want them.

Step 4:To overlap images in the Google Docs document, drag the image and position the image based on what you want on top of the image and what you want on the bottom. Ensure to drag the top image last.
Step 5: You can also use “All image options” to overlap images the way you want. To do so, on the three-dot icon below the image and choose “All image options”. The panel will open on the right side of the window. Go to the Text Wrapping section and then select the “Wrap text” option.


Step 6: Now drag the image to make them overlap one another.

Note: If you find text image appears to move with the image when you perform these steps, select ‘Fix position on page’ from the same image toolbar.
Approach-2: Using the “Google Drawings” tool
The first step is, you need to upload your image to Google Drawings. Then as the next step, you need to add the images and the text over that particular uploaded image. Follow the below steps.
Step 1: Open the Google Docs document and then click on the “Insert” menu –> Select Drawing > click on + New option.

Step 2: From the “Drawing window”, click on the “Image icon” to insert the first image.

Step 4: Once the image is inserted in the window, you can now either add text or the second image on top of the first image.
- For adding the text on the top of the image, click on the text box icon and Drag on the top of the image to make a text box, then type your favorite text inside the text box over the image. If you want you can change the text color, font, font size, etc. Even you can change the text to Bold for a better look. You can see all the customization options at the top of the Drawing window. Once done, click on the “Save and close” button to save the changes.

- To add the other image, click on the image icon again and upload the second image. This will add the image on the top of your first image. drag it to the required place with the help of the mouse cursor so that it will look like overlapping on the first image. Click on the “Save and Close” button to save the changes to your Google Docs document.

Note: You can double-click on the image to edit the image on the Drawing window.
